Alright pilot, do you want to fly soon? If the answer is yes, here are a few things you should make sure happen before you finally take off!

  1. Have you checked the weather around your airport? How about the weather within your planned flight path? If you've answered no to either, you'll definitely want to check reports using this extremely useful resource courtesy of NAV to see the possible conditions for both.
  2. Have you decided how you're going to fly? If not, this resource again courtesy of NAV shows which areas can be flown in using VFR, MVFR, or IFR!
  3. Have you decided which runway and/or airport you're going to takeoff from? If not, winds can seriously determine this. As such, you're going to want to check out the METAR and TAFs from your area! For Canadian flights, they can be found here.
  4. Now that you've gotten a lot of the weather research done, make sure all of the mechanical parts of your aircraft are working! You can never be too safe!
  5. Make sure to check that you have adequate fuel for your flight path! Put a little extra in there just in case as well!

If you've checked all of these, you should have a good understanding on if you should fly or not. Remember, this list is not exhaustive, and you will need to double check everything before you realize that you should've!

Enjoy your flight!
